Phil Kirkman

Phil is currently the Director of the PhD in Education at Anglia Ruskin University, Director of the Close-to-Research (CTR) Professional Development Lab and international advisor to the CTR project-Nepal and to CTR-Japan. Prior to this he was the Deputy Head of the School of Education (ARU), course leader for the MBA in Educational Leadership and Management and led the ARU School of Education partnership activities across the Eastern (UK) Region, nationally and internationally. As part of this work, he led the development of the ARU School of Education teacher education portfolio which culminated in being the only university to be newly awarded the status of ‘provider of QTS’ by the DfE in 2022. Following this development work, the School of Education has also been in the top ten of the Guardian Subject League Tables since 2021. Before moving to ARU, Phil worked for over 15 years in secondary education including at the University of Cambridge UK as Subject Lecturer on The Music Teacher Training course (PGCE) and subsequently at the University of Cambridge as Head of Professional Studies and Consultant to Cambridge Assessment (International). Phil's research brings together work with teachers and school leaders engaging together in developing great teaching and fostering learning school cultures. His current areas of research focus on the nature, status and development of professional knowledge including through educational Leadership and innovative pedagogy including educational technologies. He has been involved with several national projects including as a co-investigator for the EEF £3.5 million ASCENTS project and as principal investigator for the £43K DfE funded NOA Transitions Evaluation. In addition to his academic and professional publications, he co-edited the Routledge Research Companion to Popular Music Education (2017) and an editor of the Dialogic Pedagogy Journal and serves as reviewer for IMPACT (Journal of the Chartered College of Teaching). Prior to moving into academia, Phil was a secondary school teacher, pastoral manager and department leader. Alongside his teaching and research, he is actively involved in his local community as a board member and trustee for several local organisations and charities.
